The single most powerful act of conservation you can perform is purchasing a gorilla trekking permit. In Uganda, a permit costs $800 USD (as of 2025/2026). This fee is not just an entry ticket; it is a direct investment in the gorillas’ future.

An ethical trek requires adherence to strict rules designed to protect the gorillas from human-borne diseases, which they are highly susceptible to.

Maintain Distance: A minimum distance of 7 meters (21 feet) must be maintained between you and the gorillas at all times. This is crucial to prevent the transmission of respiratory illnesses.

Wear a Mask: While not always mandatory,Beautiful Safaris Uganda strongly recommends wearing a surgical mask during the encounter as an extra layer of protection for the gorillas.

Stay Home if Sick: If you show any signs of illness (cold, flu, cough), you will not be allowed to trek. This is non-negotiable for the gorillas’ safety.

Leave No Trace: Carry out all trash, including biodegradable items.
Stick to the Trails: Follow your guide’s instructions precisely to avoid trampling vegetation or disturbing other wildlife.
No Flash Photography: Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it can startle and distress the gorillas.

One of the most direct ways to support the local community is by hiring a porter at the start of your trek. These individuals, often former poachers or members of the Batwa community, earn a vital income by carrying your daypack.
